Electronic artist STOLACE announces a brand new improvisational ambient album series exploring the relationship of sound with the spaces that envelope us. “SPACES | PRELUDE” is the trailhead marker for this ambient album series, setting the tone for what is to come — audio-rich, seamless experiences that meander through different vistas and layers of open soundscapes, gritty overdriven textures, generous spatial relationships, and mesmerizing loops that will gently lead you into open pastures of tranquility and equanimity.

STOLACE (Michael Tangen) is an electronic artist from the Minneapolis area in Minnesota with broad, sweeping influences that have shaped and informed his ambient compositional style, and contributed to the rich tapestry of his prolific catalog of ambient, electronic, and psychedelic music. In addition to his 2021 re-imagination of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”, he has amassed over 48 hours worth of composed and improvisational ambient musical pieces from The Relay Station album series, including the three volume sets, “Artemis”, “Dark Matter”, and “Into the Nebula”, plus sixty-two, sixty-three and sixty-four minute performance pieces, and tomes of ambient, neoclassical, and atmospheric compositions. STOLACE has 36 full-length albums and a handful of EPs and singles. This marks his 45th release.

The SPACES album series marks a new departure from STOLACE’s previous works, in that the instrumentation is narrowly defined, and that all the recordings will be live, improvisational performances in various indoor and outdoor spaces. One key component of this approach is the relationship between music and the spaces that surround and envelop us. We often take for granted the role a room or space performs in how we hear and experience things, where ambiance often functions as another instrument in the ensemble. The right space can provide a unique hue to what you’re listening to at that moment.

Building on this theme is the added observation that the spaces in between us are not at all empty — but instead filled with energy, pressure, air movement, vibrations, soundwaves, particles of light, and all the mysteries of the quantum level. The spaces that surround us are not at all empty, but filled with life, energy, and possibility. SPACES hopes to explore and capture the dynamic nature of that hidden world.
